It happened slowly
I understand that now
we were walking side-by-side
and something
caught your attention, so you moved
to look, or maybe, listen
turning to pick it up, perhaps
and then, continuing on your way
toward, whatever it was
and I hadn’t noticed
how far you had gone, until
suddenly, across the field
we couldn’t hear each other
I no longer recognized you
far away, a beautiful kite in a windy sky
untethered, disappearing into a storm
